We take care to select animals that will thrive on our small farm and with our harsh Indiana weather conditions. Here at Gale Farms we have fallen in love with the Nubain dairy goat breed, which was first developed by crossing native British goats and long-eared goats from the Middle East, Africa, and India. The breed was accepted into the American Dairy Goat Association in 1906. The Nubians are distinguishable by their long, pendulous ears and they are recognized for producing a mild-tasting, high butterfat milk.
Our breeding goals conform to the American Dairy Goat Association guidelines and we strive for strong milk producing Nubian does that provide high milk output during their 10 month lactation cycles. Our goats are wormed according to the FAMACHA Anemia Guide. We breed for strong, easy keeping goats that have high resistance to parasites.
Our goats are pasture raised during the spring, summer and fall. During the winter months we supplement with herbacide and pesticide free, high quality alfalfa and orchard grass hay. They are given "extras" from our gardens and windfall fruit from our trees. We also give small amounts of organic oats, barley and black oil sunflower seeds to our lactating goats for extra calories during their milking cycles.
